At least the students were well behaved...

Last minute shopping...

Wednesday Video

Saying goodbye!

As I sit here in the airport I feel sad that we are leaving.  Pupils have had a truly wonderful experience and we have so many stories to tell, have learnt a lot of science and seen things that we may never see again.

Our pupils have been outstanding and a real credit to the school.  Many people have commented on the fantastic behaviour of the group and this has helped to make a wonderful trip.

We have a slight delay to our flight and will not be taking off until 11.50am but that just means we have had an extra hour to shop...parents, don't be expecting any money to come back!

Thanks to all who have read the blog and we hope you have enjoyed it.

Whale watching was sick!

Good afternoon/evening from Iceland!

Yay! Whale watching was successful! We are all so pleased, excited and in awe at the beautiful creatures we have seen today.  We set off at 1pm and were back on dry land at 5.05pm so it was a long trip.  We were lucky to see white-beaked dolphins and orca (killer) whales which is very rare and is the first time in 2 months that they have been seen so we feel this makes up for the lack of Northern lights last night.  It was a very cold trip and we were so thankful that the guides gave us special suits.  They weren't sexy but they did the job at keeping us warm.

Quite a lot of our group were very sea sick, in fact about half of them were sick which was a shame.  It became very choppy in the bay while we were whale spotting and the wind picked up a lot.  The tour company were very kind to us though, they provided us with blankets, water and sea-sickness tablets to try and help.  Only 1 out of the 5 staff were sick...Me (Mrs Roberts) let the side down being sick twice but Aaron Hill came to my rescue by providing me with a blanket when I was cold and putting my sick bag in the bin so I didn't have to get up again.  He also has a stomach made of iron as whilst I was being sick, he was eating his sandwiches right in front of me!

We are now waiting for dinner in our favourite restaurant before going back to the hotel to pack our cases :-(.  We are so sad to be leaving as we have had a unique experience and learnt and seen so much.

No lights :-(

Good morning from our last full day in Iceland :-(

Unfortunately our trip to see the northern lights wasn't successful.  We arrive at the site in the middle of nowhere about 9pm and we stayed until midnight...we didn't give up even though the temperature was minus 7 million!  The pupils were so desperate to see the lights that they insisted on staying so they occupied themselves in a number of ways.  Some of our boys decided to star gaze and promptly lay down in the snow to make the best of it.  They can now pick out the Big Dipper, Orion's Belt and the Plough.  Other members of the group found some rabbits and were discussing their adaptations to the cold and the snow.  Megan Robinson is officially the Rabbit Whisperer of Haydock as she was stroking the rabbit and managed to pick it up.  It was snuggling in her coat and our guide had some food which the pupils were feeding it.  Mrs Griffiths also organised a penguin huddle towards the end of the night for those still left out and not on the bus and we have pictures to prove it.  We got back to the hotel at about 12.30am and the pupils went straight to bed and definitely did not need any rocking to sleep.

We had a lie in this morning and didn't have to have breakfast until 9am.  Pupils are currently shopping in the town centre for presents and I have heard that one of our female pupils has just spent 7000k on 2 pairs of socks...this equates to about £35...so some very warm and posh feet are heading back to Haydock.

We are going Whale watching at 12.30pm for about 4 hours.  Pupils are very excited and we are desperately wanting to see a whale as we missed the northern lights tonight.  I will update you on our progress later.

Excited for the Aurora!

A massive thanks to Mike Brodrick for putting the videos and pictures up that we have sent him!

Our coach will be picking us up in half an hour ready to go and find the Northern Lights.  Not a bad night for it as there isn't a lot of cloud cover!  When we get off the coach we will all be layered up as it going to be extremely cold, probably around -7oC.  I actually have 5 top layers on, 3 pairs of trousers and two layers on my head...no wonder I can hardly move.  The pupils are very excited and are desperately wanting to see the lights after the museum trip today.
